The Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) Research and Innovation week was inaugurated on August 14, 2023, with a call for the university to enhance its position as a leader in research and innovation through high-impact research under the theme "Generating Knowledge and Innovations for Sustainable Development."

During the launch of the Research and Innovation week, Vice-Chancellor of MUBAS, Associate Professor Nancy Chitera, expressed the university's aim to become a "research-intensive university" with a focus on entrepreneurial skills. She emphasized the importance of MUBAS engaging in high-impact research both locally and internationally to establish the university as a symbol of research and innovation.

Associate Professor Chitera also highlighted the establishment of a Technology Transfer Centre and Research Support Unit at MUBAS to coordinate all research endeavors and innovations, which are now fully operational.

In her keynote address, the Guest of Honour, Director General of the National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST), Mrs. Gift Kadzamira, affirmed the Commission's commitment to promoting research and innovation as one of its key mandates. She stressed the need for Malawi to become a knowledgeable society capable of solving its own challenges, rather than relying on foreign solutions that may not be suitable. Mrs. Kadzamira encouraged universities to take the lead in promoting scientific and technological research to address challenges such as climate change, food insecurity, and access to clean water.

“National Commission for Science and Technology would consider providing specialized funding for university research, focusing on the research agenda for Malawi's priority areas with the aim of supporting researchers in finding solutions to the challenges faced by Malawians and contribute to the country's development goals,” disclosed Kadzamira.

She commended MUBAS for organizing the Research and Innovation week, recognizing its potential to improve Malawi's research ranking and inspire other universities to follow MUBAS's lead.

Furthermore, Kadzamira mentioned that the NCST is collaborating with the Registrar General's office to protect the works of Malawian researchers and innovators through the legal framework. She encouraged researchers and innovators to work with her office and utilize the university structures to avoid exploitation.

One of the postgraduate students, Gladson Makowa, who followed the research and innovation presentations said: “Malawians would benefit a lot if they utilised the different outputs being showcased during the MUBAS Research and innovations week.”

During the Research and Innovation week, being held from August 14-16, 2023, offers MUBAS staff and students an opportunity to showcase their recent innovations and present research findings. The event would end with an award presentation ceremony to recognize the best innovators among the staff and students who have demonstrated exceptional research and innovations.
