2020 INTAKE

The Malawi Polytechnic, a Constituent College of the University of Malawi, Faculty of Applied Sciences is inviting applications for the following Postgraduate Programmes which will commence in September, 2020.

1. DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PhD)

  •  PhD Applied Sciences (Environmental Sanitation)
  • PhD Applied Sciences (Renewable Energy)
  • PhD Applied Sciences (Public Health Engineering)
  •  PhD Applied Sciences (Information Technology)
  •  PhD Applied Sciences (Industrial Process Technology)
  •  PhD Applied Sciences (Environmental Protection and Management)
  •  PhD (Applied Mathematics)
  •  PhD (Applied Statistics)

2. MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY IN APPLIED SCIENCES (MPhil)

  •  MPhil Applied Sciences (Environmental Sanitation)
  •  MPhil Applied Sciences (Renewable Energy)
  •  MPhil Applied Sciences (Industrial Process Technology)
  •  MPhil Applied Sciences (Environmental Protection and Management)
  •  MPhil Applied Sciences (Environmental Health)
  •  MPhil (Applied Mathematics)
  •  MPhil (Applied Statistics)

Candidates for PhD programmes must have a relevant Masters or MPhil degree from recognized institutions while for MPhil the candidate must have an Honors degree in the Firstor Upper Second Division or a bachelor’s degree with at least a Credit or a strong.

Candidates with bachelor’s degree will be required to accumulate 60 credits of taught modules relevant to the selected MPhil research area. The PhD and MPhil programmes are of 3 and 2.5 years duration, respectively.

Fees and Expenses

  1.  US$10, 000 (Paid in MK Equivalent) for the whole programme of PhD will cater for supervision and examination costs with an Indicative figure of US $ 4,500 forresearch for the whole PhD programme
  2.  US$5,500 (Paid in MK Equivalent) for the whole programme of MPhil will cater for tuition, supervision and examination costs with indicative figure of US$3,500 for research for the whole MPhil programme for budgeting purposes.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR PhD AND MPhil;

  •  A completed PhD & MPhil applications MUST INCLUDE:
  •  A non-refundable application fee of MK10,000 for Malawian applicants and US$25.00 for international applicants;
  • .A completed postgraduate application form;
  •  Academic transcripts of all previous university courses taken includingpercentage scores where necessary;
  •  Certified copies of relevant certificates;
  •  An abstract of master’s research or dissertation;
  •  A concept paper relating to the proposed research topic which should not be more than 5 pages long. The concept note must include the following;
  1.  Introduction
  2.  Problem statement
  3.  Research objective
  4.  Preliminary literature review
  5.  Methodology
  6.  references
  7.  Sample academic writing i.e. publications, conference reports, etc which adhere to the broad conventions of academic publishing (i.e. contain an up-to-date reviewof relevant literature, a description of relevant research methods and an evaluation of results, etc.) and which identify the applicant as a significant contributor (maximum of 30 pages);
  8.  1letters from an academic referee at postgraduate level and 1 letter from professional referee; A detailed latest CV. 

Please note that PhD and MPhil candidates may apply for placement at any time of theacademic year.

APPLICATION METHOD

  1.  Put all your necessary application documents in one folder on your computer e.g. filled application form, relevant certified copies of degree, academic transcripts, letters fromtwo referees (academic reference and professional reference);and an original bank deposit slip.
  2.  Include a concept note, samples of academic writing and an abstract of your masters if you are a PhD applicant/ or a concept note if you are an MPhil applicant.
  3.  Create a zip folder on your computer.
  4.  Attach the zip folder to an email and send the email to:applications-postgraduate@poly.ac.mw
