Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Accountant tenable in Finance Department at The Polytechnic, a constituent college of the University of Malawi. 

 Duties

Receivables

• Prepare provision schedule and adjustment journal 

• Check list of outstanding debts 

• Write-off approved list of bad debts 

• Check invoices for receivables

• Produce monthly income and receivable schedules 

• Check receivable journals

• Reconcile debtors clearing accounts

Payables

• Prepare reconciliation of payable listing with control account 

• Reconcile payable clearing accounts

• Review supplier reconciliations

• Prepare pension and gratuity deductions  

• Check payroll 

• Prepare monthly payroll journal

•Prepare accruals report

• Prepare monthly tax liability schedules

• Process monthly stipends to eligible students 

• Check payment vouchers 

Bank Reconciliation

• Prepare monthly cash commitments summary 

• Check bank reconciliation

• Establish outstanding cashbook issues with banks

• Reconcile cash related clearing accounts

• Journalise bank transfer transactions

• Check payment vouchers

• Reconcile and report fixed deposits 

• Check cashier’s bank deposits 

• Maintain files for fixed deposits 

• Prepare payments through bank transfer letters and reports

General Ledger

• Update fixed asset register monthly

• Generate accounts codes 

• Conduct stock take with auditors 

• Maintain journal voucher control file

• Check payment vouchers 

• Conduct general ledger reconciliation

Projects

• Prepare project income and expenditure reports 

• Maintain project files 

• Reconcile project funds against cashbook 

• Prepare project audit schedules 

• Check project payment vouchers

• Track and report University revenue from projects 

Supervision

• Supervise and appraise staff Assistant Accountant

 

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from a recognised institution

• Relevant Professional certificate(s)

• Member of ICAM

• 2 year’s relevant experience 

• Those applying from the public service should have certificate of declaration of assets
