As one way of contributing to nature conservation, the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) this year embarked on a tree planting exercise around its premises and campuses in Blantyre and Lilongwe on 22nd and 29th March, 2025.

Led by MUBAS Council Chairperson, Professor George Yobe Kanyama-Phiri, staff members and students of the university planted a number of trees species such as m’bawa and pine at the university’s main campus in Blantyre and the MUBAS Nanjiri Campus in Lilongwe.

Speaking during the launch of the tree planting exercise which took place on 22nd March, 2025, Professor Kanyama Phiri said the symbiotic relationship between humans and trees is key to sustainability of life and he urged all Malawians to take part in nature conservation.

‘’ The objective of this exercise is to ensure that we conserve nature, our existence on this earth is dependent on trees which provide us with oxygen. Trees also offer us protection from calamities such as the cyclones we have experienced over the  years. Trees also provide manure to our soil, so we really need to plant and take care of our trees,’’ he said.

Kanyama Phiri added that trees need nourishment to grow and he urged the MUBAS community to take an active role in monitoring the trees they have planted this year if they are to survive.

‘’ We should not just plant these trees and go, we need to take care of them so that they grow,’’ he further said.

Director of Leadership for Environment and Development (LEAD), Professor Sosten Chiotha who was in attendance during the exercise in Blantyre hailed MUBAS for the initiative.

‘’ Institutions of higher learning have a critical role in conserving nature through research and other initiatives including the tree planting witnessed today,’’ said Chiotha

In his remarks, during the MUBAS Nanjiri tree planting activity, Senior Group Village Headman Mwase, assured the gathering that his subjects and all villagers surrounding the MUBAS Nanjiri Campus will take part in conserving the newly planted trees.

‘’ When these trees grow up, all people living around this area will benefit, so we will all take part in caring for these trees,’’ he said.

Over 1400 trees were planted during the exercise.
