The Afikepo nutrition program, a collaborative effort by the FAO, UNICEF, and the Government of Malawi, addressed food and nutrition insecurity and undernutrition in ten districts. The project aimed to enhance nutrition security by increasing the availability, access, and utilization of diversified foods at the household level.

Targeting districts such as Chitipa, Karonga, Nkhatabay, and others, the program seeks to improve dietary intake among women, adolescent girls, and young children. The program, that incorporated the Malawin University of Business and Applied Science - MUBAS, focused on social behavior change communication to promote nutrition.

MUBAS, as a key advocate for Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC), played a crucial role in the Afikepo nutrition program's capacity building and strengthening. The university contributed expertise to enhance communication strategies aimed at promoting positive behavioral changes related to nutrition.

“Our main responsibility was capacity building and strengthening of district level staff that were implementing Afikepo activities in the 10 districts across Malawi, said Lusizi Kambaleme, a Social and Behaviour Change expert and at MUBAS in the Language and Communication Department. This was achieved by among other things training the district level staff through workshops. This component within the project underscores MUBAS's commitment to fostering effective communication techniques that empower communities to diversify food resources and improve nutritional practices.
