Master of Science in Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) (April 2020 Intake)

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) is fast becoming a key issue in protecting people and the environment from the risks associated with workplace activities. It involves employers and employees, as well as regulators. The Department of Environmental Health at the Polytechnic and the Department of Public Health at College of Medicine are pleased to jointly announce the introduction of a highly specialized programme in OSH, Master of Science in Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH). 

What is an MSc in Occupational Safety and Health? 

MSc in OSH is a postgraduate degree program that trains practitioners and scholars to become experts in the field of health and safety in workplaces. This highly practical field strives to ensure that it develops and upholds safety and health standards in the workplace; ultimately protecting the health and welfare of workers. This highly specialized degree will benefit participants by ensuring that they become qualified health and safety professionals, allowing for increased career opportunities. 

Overview of the programme

This two-year course will help you explore the scientific, health and psychosocial factors influencing health and safety of workers in the challenging contemporary workplace environments. In this programme, participants will learn identification of hazardous practices, manage workplace risks, develop effective health and safety practices, and design effective programs to improve health and safety of workers in all occupations.

Entry requirements

1. A BSc degree in Environmental Health, Engineering and Chemistry or relevant subject area, with Credit or Distinction. 

2. Candidates with a pass degree in a relevant subject should have significant proven experience in the field, minimum of two years. 

3. Some candidates may be interviewed and/or their qualifications vetted with awarding bodies to ascertain their suitability for this programme.

Fees structure

Fees for the programme shall be Malawi Kwacha equivalent of US$6,500 for domicile and SADC students payable in two installments. International students from countries outside the SADC region shall pay $7500. Fees are subject to change from time to time. The fees cover tuition and dissertation supervision.  Research fees for students who want to conduct their research using College laboratory will depend on the type of research.

Application procedure for masters;

A complete Masters Programme application MUST INCLUDE: 

1. A completed application form and CV; 

2. Two reference letters; One (1)  from an Academic Referee and One (1)  from a Professional Referee; 

3. Certified Academic Transcript; 

4. Certified copies of original certificates by a commissioner of oath or Lawyers or the Central Office (University Office where the candidate graduated from); 

5. A non-refundable application fee of MK10,000 for Malawian applicants and US$25.00 for international applicants;

Applicants are asked to apply using application forms which can be downloaded from the following websites: www.poly.ac.mw or www.medcol.mw. Copies of the application forms can also be collected in person from the Polytechnic Registry or from the Office of the Dean of Postgraduate Studies & Research (Polytechnic) or the office of the Assistant Registrar Academic (Polytechnic).
