Mr Moses Mwenye - The Registrar
|Served||From January, 2015|
|Qualifications||BA (HRM), MA (HRM)|
Moses Mwenye is the registrar at the University of Malawi—The Polytechnic. Trained in human resource management, Mwenye is responsible for providing leadership with respect to administration at the college. In fact, his purview extends to more than just administration and, in effect, includes academics, human resource management and student welfare matters. Frankly, his office involves a little bit of everything really, and he is ably assisted by the assistant registrar for academics, Mrs. Yamikani Chilinde, the assistant registrar for human resources, Mr. Gregory Banda, and the assistant registrar for administration, Mr. Martin Matululu. Not surprisingly, given the breadth of his mandate, Mwenye serves on various college-wide committees.
With respect to human resources, the office of the registrar must plan and develop for staff hires and maintain industrial peace by resolving conflicts. It his office that also interprets and administers staff policies and conditions of service. As such, he also manages employment contracts and staff records. Together with the principal, vice principal, and the finance officer Mwenye is a signatory on college financial matters. Naturally, therefore, he is also involved in the preparation of the budget. Similarly, together with the estates officer, he has oversight over college property, and he makes decisions together with the transport officer regarding transport needs at the college.
He coordinates the legal affairs involving staff and students, and oversees student recruitment, selection and registration, including managing their records. At the end of every semester, Mwenye works with his assistant registrar for academics and the examinations officer—the vice principal—to facilitate student examinations. In the end, he is also responsible for coordinating student graduation ceremonies and processing their academic transcripts when they need them. Thus, the office of the registrar is the one office at the Polytechnic that has a pulse on what happens in every other office. It is also the one office at the Polytechnic that everyone—staff or student—must deal with at some point in their time here and even after they have left.
Moses Mwenye has a Bachelor’s in Human Resource Management (2002) from University of Malawi, Chancellor College and a Master’s in Human Resource Management (2009) from the same institution. He also has a Diploma in Business Studies (1992). He came to the Polytechnic in 2015 after working for many years at various institutions. Notably, he worked as an assistant registrar at his alma mater, Chancellor College, in 2003, and by 2007 he was acting registrar. A brief hiatus saw him become human resources manager at Dairiboard Malawi in 2009 before he took up the same position at FINCA from 2009-2010. From 2011 to 2012 he was senior human resource and administration officer at the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA). His last position before finding his way back to the University of Malawi, at the Polytechnic this time, was as director of human resource and administration at the Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TEVETA).
Moses Mwenye is a family man, a Christian who worships at Calvary Family Church (CFC) right here in Blantyre. When not occupied by his professional duties he likes to listen to Malawian music, the likes of Allan Namoko and Chimvu Rivers Band.
